Role Overview

This position will serve as a summer Intern for the hydraulics Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to Indianapolis, IN.


Salary Statement

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

 

Location

This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office, Indianapolis.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations 
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
  • The intern will complete culvert hydraulics projects under the supervision of the hydraulics staff. They will learn some of the computer programs used by the Hydraulics division. This includes learning to use Arc Pro (GIS), HY8, TR-20, and other tools used to determine discharge and culvert sizing. 
  • The INDOT Design Manual will be studied and applied in determination of structure sizing. 
  • Trips to locations throughout the state may be necessary to perform survey on the culvert projects assigned. 
  • Depending on progress of intern, bridge hydraulics may be assigned before the end of the summer. This would include learning to use HEC-RAS (bridge modeling software) to size a bridge for design.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline 
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels 
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Relevant work experience preferred 
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT 
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations 
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process 
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports 
  • Analytical skills 
  • Ability to handle multiple projects 
  • Ability to operate computer tools 
  • Good research and writing skills 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts 
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances 

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
