Job Description and Duties

The Information Technology Specialist I will be responsible for the administration of the Department’s server infrastructure. The individual will be part of a team that manages Windows/Linux servers, VMware, storage, and backups for the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Responsibilities include planning, installation, configuration, and operation of server infrastructure technologies. This includes virtual servers, physical servers, blade enclosures, server network design, and enterprise storage management. In addition, the Information Technology Specialist I will collaborate with other groups to support CHP custom applications as well as commercial-off-the-shelf solutions. The individual will be an integral part in maintaining system high availability for CHP operations and continued public safety.

Working Conditions

Monday through Friday 0800-1700 hours. Occasional after hours and weekends when required. Occasional travel when needed. Telework may be available for this position once the probation period is successfully completed.

The  Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing.  Each question must be numbered and addressed in the same order as the questions below.  The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages in length, and 12-point Arial font.

  1. Share an example of a complex issue you encountered in a VMware or Windows Server environment. How did you identify and resolve the issue and what was the outcome?
  2. Describe your experience with VMware virtualization technologies, including designing, deploying, and managing VMware environments. Provide examples of specific projects or implementations you have worked on.
  3. Explain your experience managing and maintaining Windows Server environments. Include your knowledge of Active Directory, group policy management, and server performance optimization.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Knowledge of and experience with VMware ESXi, knowledge of and experience with enterprise storage systems, knowledge of and experience with Windows Server administration, knowledge of and experience with Active Directory/Domain Controllers, has well-developed verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills and the ability to solve technical problems, and can provide outstanding customer service.
